Understanding Team Chemistry

In the midst of our busy schedules, there's always something to look forward to every week. In this case, a social team sport or an advanced level of competition. Having to discuss team dynamics, tactics and hopefully bringing everyone on the same page may sometimes be much more complicated than it seems and we haven't even included the non-tangible aspects of players enjoyment in the sport, equal game time opportunities and the list goes on... Let's take a look at 10 easy tips (in no particular order) to approach and manage a better team dynamic with a positive outlook.

1. Understand the level of competition-

Most teams fail to comprehend what to expect in the level or grade they sign up for. Others seem to still live the reminiscence of their glory days which sometimes could create adverse effects within the team. Playing above par is no problem, playing with a slightly different mentality and robustness could create tension.

2. Be sensible and gracious-

One of the hardest attributes to acquire. Team members all come from different walks of life. Some may have it easy and others not quite so. Some may have more experience in life and others still finding their feet. You will always get different characteristics and values of each individual. No one is perfect and no one likes to be on the downside of things. Try to understand the reason for their behaviour and emotional outburst due to their difficulties and encourage or have a different approach in communication.

3. Get to know your team-

You can't assume everyone is going to gel and get along just fine yet alone perform to expectations. Organise a simple get together i.e. Bbq, sundowner. You'll be surprised how much positivity this could translate on game days.

4. Respect is earn Not given-

You definitely don't want to be that "girl/guy" in the team. Everyone reacts differently to circumstances so put them ego aside and play the game.

5. Leave your problems outside-

Team members could sometimes use game days as a source of anger management therapy. Bare in mind this could be a recipe for disaster. Whatever the issue is, wear the appropriate hat for the occasion. Speak to your team manager or captain as they will be able to better to support you and could even turn the situation into a tactical one. i.e. running harder down the wing or taking a penalty shot.

6. Encourage, encourage , encourage-

We often are quick to point out mistakes and hardly ever encourage during mediocre team performance. Having to encourage and back team mates can sometimes turn the game around or improve pockets of play leading into a comeback and possibly a win.

7. Delegate team roles-

Get the team involved. You want members to be part of the team and have a sense of belonging. Ie team members could take turns taking warmups, team dinner etc.

8. Practice makes perfect-

Having a few practice sessions does make a difference. The team could work and improve on areas they lack shown on game days. Team practice also strengthens cohesion and communication.

9. Set goals-

Set realistic goals that can be achieved. Having to set a target creates better focus and a task to work towards to.

10. Selecting the right formula-

Select players for the right position. Use strength and limitations to create that equilibrium. This goes across all aspect of players attributes. i.e. Skill, age, character, experience, upbringing and value systems.
